The Albatros D series included the D.I, D.II, D.III, D.V, as well as the D.Va. This series rapidly evolved on account of battlefield needs, and most models were around for only months before being replaced. The D.I was powered with assorted engines, such as Mercedes D.III and the Benz Bz.III, which were powerful engines. Richthofen isn't recorded as flying a D.I, but he did fly the D.II, D.III, and D.V.

Young Diesel graduated near the top of his class in 1873 and signed up for the Industrial School of Augsburg. Two years later he enrolled at the Royal Bavarian Polytechnic in Munich.
