The automobile is really a complex machine comprised of different components each which has a specific role. Some algae species are 50% or more lipid oil by weight. This oil may be pressed from the algae and refined into diesel. The process for extracting algal oil, at its simplest level, resembles pressing an olive. Up to 75% from the oil might be squeezed from algae using a simple mechanical press. Hexane might be used being a solvent to raise extraction up to 95%. Once extracted, the oil is refined through transesterification. A catalyst including sodium hydroxide is combined with alcohol to make biodiesel and glycerol.
