Governments and law enforcement agencies apply it to identify stolen vehicles, and motorists demand it after they take their cars to some mechanic, plus its useful when choosing a second hand car, so that you can operate a vehicle history report. The insurance industry often uses vehicle identification numbers, too. VINs are generally engraved on aluminum plates, cast or stamped, like a bar code, or perhaps label form, plus they can be found on the car's steering column, doorjamb, driver's door, passenger side door, dashboard, as well as in a vehicle's maintenance book and title.
