A hard reset basically resets certain parameters of one's iPod returning to default. You will not lose your music and other files. However, some of the settings may reset. The time and date for the iPod will probably be preserved, unless your iPod may be completely drained of all battery then reconnected to power. In that case, you may lose time and date settings.
