The process for extracting algal oil, at its simplest level, resembles pressing an olive. Up to 75% from the oil might be squeezed from algae using a simple mechanical press. Hexane might be used being a solvent to raise extraction up to 95%. Once extracted, the oil is refined through transesterification. A catalyst including sodium hydroxide is combined with alcohol to make biodiesel and glycerol.
