Remove the battery from the laptop and identify which sort it's. It will be printed on the case somewhere, and you will be either a Nickel Cadmium (NiCd,) Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH,) or Lithium Ion (LiON.). If it is among the first two sorts this strategy is the main one to work with.
